Timeless Truths: Exploring Historic Quotes for Modern Insights

In my younger years, I often wondered how was it possible some historical figures were able craft such profound quotes. How did they manage to invent these wise sayings that are as relevant today as they were back then? After all, they were not nearly as advanced as we are today. Surely we have evolved well beyond their limited understanding of the world in their time.

Of course that was the younger version of myself. It was the “growing up” that brought me to understand that physical things change rapidly, while the human condition advances at a much slower pace. This is why these timeless truths are as relevant today as they were back then - the human experiences are incremental. One of the first quotes I truly could understand was "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." This was constantly referenced in the 60's and 70's as there were numerous conflicts around the world during that time - especially the cold war.

Timeless truths have always been fascinating to me.

But it was in the 80's when I entered the insurance industry, I began my relationship with famous quotes. Over my career, I grew to appreciate the high level of sophistication that was derived from so few simple words.I often wondered how the essence of the quote could be captured so succinctly? Although I could never really understand the genius behind it, I was smart enough to leverage such wisdoms as much as possible and as a result, found it extremely impactful in both my career and personal life.

Fast forward to today, I decided to share my fascination with these wise words by writing short blogs on LinkedIn. How hard could it be? There was certainly plenty of materiaI on hand. The authors already did all the heavy lifting by creating the quote. I would just have to cite the source to give credit where credit was due.

I was always comfortable with conveying ideas and opinions verbally, however I was never comfortable with writing. Sure, as a CEO of an insurance company, I wrote leadership content in board reports, however I soon remembered how I agonized over the process, to use the exact words to convey the intended message.

How was I to start with this? Will I do it justice? After all, these are legendary historical figures who have accomplished monumental feats of greatness in addition to the creation of these timeless truths. It didn't take long to find a million reasons why I wasn't ready to start this series.

However, while working through this experience, it dawned on me to do exactly what I was going to advise readers to do - look for a quote that deals with my own current human condition. Although it felt very unique to me, I realized I was not the first person to experience this!

And there it was - Mark Twain’s ”The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” Twain's simple yet profound wisdom reminded me that progress begins with action. Of course, other quotes started popping up trying to gain favour to be part of this first blog, however I turned to my go to favourite - Winston Churchill's ”You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.” , so I heeded his advice and went back to Twain. It didn't need to be perfect. It just needed to be started.

The start of any journey is often the hardest part.

The Secret of Getting Ahead

Mark Twain's quote, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started," uses such elegant simplicity which speaks volumes about the nature of progress and success. It's a reminder that the most daunting projects and dreams often begin with a single step. Whether you're launching a new business, starting a creative project, or making a significant life change, the hardest part is often just beginning.

In the world of business, this principle is especially pertinent. Entrepreneurs and leaders know that waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect plan can lead to endless delays. It's the act of starting, of taking that first leap, that moves us forward and opens up new possibilities.

The same is true in your personal life. There is no perfect moment if you really want to achieve something - whether that is learning to play a sport, an instrument, a new language or a little closer to home - losing a little bit of weight that has crept up on us over the years.

Of course all of this takes effort in some form, however if you know deep down it is important to you, just get started. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Take this article for instance, it will be rough in the beginning but at least I got started. It can only get better the more I do it!

What to Expect in This Series

Churchill. Aristotle. Sun Tzu. How is it possible that the words of leaders from centuries gone by are still relevant today? I will focus on a quote each week and demonstrate how these insights can guide us in our personal and professional lives, offering actionable advice and inspiration.

Historic Quotes & Why This Series Matters

In a fast-paced and ever-changing world, it is easy to overlook the wisdom of the past by incorrectly thinking it doesn’t apply today.  However, history as boring as you may remember it in high school, is actually quite interesting and entertaining. Let’s “stand on the shoulders of giants” as we navigate our future.
